Association ( EMA ) revealed Last Sunday, a project was adopted that uses artificial intelligence-based digital systems to combat hate speech on social media platforms in Ethiopia.
The Director General of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation explained, Hemanot Zalqi said that these digital systems enhance the ability to monitor and respond to hate speech on social media of all kinds.
The announcement coincided with a recent report analyzing the reality of harmful content on digital platforms, based on data analysis from major websites within Ethiopia, particularly Meta Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, X, and YouTube, along with the opinions of Ethiopian audiences in several cities, not to mention the complaints monitored through the official channels of the broadcasting authority.
Director-General Zalqi described the spread of misinformation, which carries within it the concept of hate speech, especially content supported by artificial intelligence technology, as creating challenges to national consciousness that directly affect the lack of social peace and the course of the democratic process, especially with the approach of the general elections.
Hemanot Zalqi explained that the report aims to monitor trends in the spread of misinformation and hate speech in order to measure and assess their effects on the receiving public, and to study them to choose an appropriate technique to combat them, noting that the results show a gradual increase in the complexity of this type of content.
The Ethiopian Media Authority issued a warning to all users of social media platforms to adhere to legal rules and adopt regulatory standards in dealing with all harmful content, stressing the important role of media institutions in promoting cultural and media awareness among the public, and pointing out that combating the spread of misinformation requires coordination between the private sector and government media bodies, in addition to the civil society organizations sector.
According to analystsو With this step, Ethiopia is almost third in issuing regulations that limit the random and negative use of artificial intelligence technology, after China and the United Arab Emirates, and in a unique way from its predecessors, as it has taken the disease as a cure, especially by activating systems based on the artificial intelligence itself to monitor the use of digital platforms for misinformation and spreading hate speech.
