Djibouti Ministry of Interior announced yesterday, Saturday, the final results of the presidential elections held last Friday between Mr. Al-Hajj/Ismail Omar Guelleh, the country’s former president, and his only rival/Mohamed Farah Samatar.
where he was re-elected for a sixth-year term, securing 97.8% of the vote Djibouti country which in the Horn of Africa, compared to 3.2% for his rival Mohamed Farah Samatar .
Friday was the designated day for the presidential election, the ninth such election in the country’s history since independence in 1975, with approximately 400,000 voters eligible to cast their ballots out of a total population of about 1.3 million .
Prior to the start of the presidential elections, the signs pointed to a victory for Mr. Guelleh, who has been leading the country for some time after the deputies abolished the presidential age limits last year.
Ismail Omar Guelleh, the 78-year-old, leader of the Union for the Presidential Majority coalition, began his presidency in 1999, behind his uncle, former President Hassan Gouled Aptidon .
President Ismail Omar Guelleh received congratulations from numerous diplomatic and popular circles on the occasion of his assumption of a sixth presidential term, most notably a congratulatory message from Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
