Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan stated during a speech on the occasion of Eid, that his government is not prepared to deal with any initiative to stop the fighting unless the political and military roles of the Rapid Support Forces are ended.
Al-Burhan stressed his rejection of any ceasefire arrangements without the Rapid Support Forces withdrawing from the positions they control, explaining that any truce before this plan will not guarantee a sustainable peace.
He said, in his words, that any future agreement must include a specific timetable, with a guarantee that weapons will be supplied to state institutions and that any armed formations outside the official framework will be prevented.
He added that the army will continue its operations against the Rapid Support Forces and its allies without interruption, unless there is a condition that leads to ending the causes of the conflict and ensuring security.
Observers describe Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s approach to peace as zero, citing the tone of his sharp speech and his tendency to escalate tensions, as well as the ceiling of his proposed conditions, which seem almost impossible to implement on the ground, describing al-Burhan’s conditions for reaching peace as based on denying the existence of the other party instead of containing it.
In a related context, United Nations expressed concern about the expansion of the war beyond Sudan due to the use of advanced drones.
United Nations warned of the conflict spreading beyond Sudan’s borders, after at least 17 civilians were targeted by a drone on the Chadian side of the border with Sudan, according to a report by the international organization.
United Nations called on all parties to the war to de-escalate the armed conflict and abide by international humanitarian law, noting that the continuation and expansion of the armed conflict and the deterioration of the situation are not options for a solution, but rather only through a political solution.
