The African Council of Peace and Security hold meeting on February 11 and 12 in Addis Ababa, in preparation for the round 39th of African Union Summit for Heads of State and Governments scheduled for February 14 and 15.
The Peace and Security Council meeting focused its discussions on the course of events in Somalia, expressing its condemnation and rejection of Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland region.

As the highest authority in the African Union, the Council called on Israel to withdraw its recognition of Somaliland, and appealed to member states and international partners to uphold Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
They also discussed ways and possibilities for the necessity of stopping the war in Sudan, rejecting foreign interventions that fuel discord among the people of Sudan.

The meeting revealed the African Union’s intention to potentially end the suspension of Sudan’s membership, as well as Sudanese Foreign Minister MohyelDin Salem attended the Peace and Security Council meeting in response to an official invitation from the Council, coinciding with the diplomatic effort to regain seat of Sudan after the suspension of membership after the actions of the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council/Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in October 2021, which at the time the African Union considered a “ military coup”.
The Peace and Security Council has released a draft statement, agreed upon in an unprecedented manner by the 15 member states, affirming the Council’s full support for the Sudanese people, and reiterating the African Union’s commitment to its solidarity with them, preserving their unity of Sudan, and rejecting any parallel entities or parties that undermine their legitimacy, according to the draft statement.
