In a move to consolidate its control and manage security and economic files, the Security and Defense Council of the “TASIS” coalition government launched its work by holding its first meeting on last tuesday, chaired by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The meeting resulted in the adoption of a package of strict measures aimed at controlling internal security, combating crime, and securing humanitarian and economic activities in government-controlled areas.
According to an official statement issued by the council, intelligence and security reports dominated the discussions, as they monitored movements of groups that the statement described as “linked to the Islamic movement”.
The council accused these groups of systematically seeking to incite tribal tensions in several regions, as well as practicing “polarization” incitement, and burning markets to destabilize public order.
Accordingly, the council issued decisive directives to the security services to pursue these activities and to crack down with an iron fist on anyone who obstructs the lives of citizens, with a focus on preventing the closure of roads or disruption of markets under any pretext.
These decisions come as a direct response to the unrest that has taken place in Nyala in recent weeks, which has included frequent protests, market closures, and looting of shops.
The latest of these tensions occurred last Saturday, following a wave of anger that ensued after the Rapid Support Forces arrested a member of an armed group in the city.
On the economic and living standards front, the meeting set a strategy to protect resources by securing the productive sector by putting in place immediate arrangements to protect the current agricultural season, in addition to closing smuggling outlets by tightening control over the movement of agricultural and animal goods and preventing their smuggling abroad, while praising the recent seizures carried out by the competent authorities, in addition to confronting organized crime, by directing the security services to strengthen and take measures to combat cross-border crimes, especially arms trafficking, drugs, and human trafficking.
On the humanitarian track, the council approved a security plan to secure relief convoys and protect humanitarian workers to ensure that aid reaches those who need it without hindrance.
The council concluded its statement by affirming its full commitment to imposing stability in the areas under its control, and calling on citizens and local communities to cooperate closely with the security services to ensure the success of this package of decisions and to guarantee the rule of public order.
