In a qualitative leap reflecting a strategic shift in the digital economy map of the African continent, Ethiopia has succeeded in securing its place among the big players, settling in eighth place globally as one of the largest centers for mining the most prominent cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.
Ethiopian ambition is no longer just plans on paper; recent data has been translated into realistic figures confirming that Addis Ababa now controls about 2.6% of the total global computing power (Hashrate) allocated to operating and securing the Bitcoin network, thus breaking into the prestigious global club of the top 10 countries in this complex technological sector.
The Success Triad: Cheap Energy, Flexible Legislation, and Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam:
This rapid rise is driven by a combination of competitive advantages that have made the country an attractive environment for major international companies specializing in operating giant mining facilities and digital processing centers.

These motives, as seen by analysts, are summarized in the abundance of renewable and low-cost energy, as clean electricity with its competitive prices compared to global markets represents the main fuel for attracting these investments. In addition to that comes direct government support, especially the Ethiopian government’s adoption of open approaches to support digital infrastructure and data centers and facilitate the entry of foreign investments. Moreover, the impact of the “ Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam ” is embodied as the most prominent development project, and as a fundamental pillar and essential driver in this boom, as it has directly contributed to raising electricity production rates, which has strengthened the state’s ability to absorb and feed energy-intensive industries, foremost among them cryptocurrency mining.
” Digital Ethiopia 2030″… The Vision Takes Shape:
According to observers, Ethiopia’s rise in the Bitcoin mining sector reflects a smart shift towards employing renewable energy resources to attract value-added technology investments, thus cementing the country’s position as an emerging regional hub for digital infrastructure and technology services in Africa.
This digital achievement falls within the objectives of the ambitious government vision “ Digital Ethiopia 2030” , and the state is intensifying its efforts through this strategy to accelerate the pace of digital transformation and expand the horizons of technological investment, in order to ensure that the digital economy contributes to driving the development and comprehensive economic growth of the country.
