A reckless move by  European Union raises regional concerns about inclusion of the Red Sea region in war strategies between Iran, United States and Israel.

A meeting of EU foreign and energy ministers was held, a few days ago, in Brussels to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East and the implications of ongoing conflict on the security of maritime trade routes, most notably the Strait of Hormuz.

Kaya Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, explained that the Union is exploring ways to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, stressing that this is in Europe’s vital interest which has given the rising energy prices following the war between Iran, United States, and Israel.

Kallas revealed that European Union is moving towards authorizing its military forces for the ASPIDES mission tasked with securing ships in the Red Sea, noting the possibility of authorizing the ASPIDES mission to open and secure the Strait of Hormuz.

In a related context,  ASPIDES naval mission forces, two days ago, showcased, through a video posted on their X account, their military and logistical capabilities capable of securing a wide maritime area starting from Red Sea, passing through Bab al-Mandab Strait, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, ending with the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.

ASPIDES mission noted in a commentary accompanying the demonstration video that since the mission began on February 19, 2024, it has successfully secured 1,700 ships in the southern part of Red Sea, announcing that the ASPIDES mission may extend to the Strait of Hormuz and Arabian Gulf .

Observers believe that European Union’s involvement in the ASPIDES mission to open and secure Strait of Hormuz may expand the scope of the regional maritime conflict from the Strait of Hormuz to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea by Iran and its allied forces, and once European Union is involved, the unforeseen may occur in terms of the widespread outbreak of maritime insecurity.
