The recent armed clashes in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, have brought the humanitarian situation to brink of collapse. According to the latest report issued by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the fierce fighting between government forces and opposition factions has resulted in the death of 13 people and the injury of 189 others, in addition to the displacement of about 12,500 families fleeing from hell of the fighting.
According to UN monitoring, the fighting started near the vital ” Dabka intersection” , but quickly spread like wildfire to include several neighborhoods in the capital.
This rapid expansion of the conflict has caused a complete paralysis and a tragic deterioration of the living and humanitarian conditions of the besieged population .
In the face of this rapidly deteriorating situation, UNHCR and its international partners raised the alarm, urgently calling on parties of the conflict to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law and human rights principles, to protect civilians and the city’s infrastructure from shelling, and to open safe and unconditional corridors to ensure that aid and humanitarian relief teams reach those affected without hindrance.
Meanwhile, diplomats are racing against time to contain the crisis, with Turkey leading intensive mediation efforts to calm the situation and bring the conflicting parties to the negotiating table.
These moves come amid a wave of growing international and regional concern, fearing that these confrontations will undermine the fragile political and security stability in Somalia.
