The Somali capital, Mogadishu, is experiencing an atmosphere of anticipation and extreme political and security tension, against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s decision to ban demonstrations outside of specific squares, a measure that was met with categorical rejection by opposition forces ahead of the protests scheduled to begin tomorrow, Thursday, June 4.
Breaking the Barriers: The Opposition Clings to the Streets:
In the face of government pressure, former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, during a meeting that included political mediators and clan elders, announced his complete rejection of official efforts aimed at confining protests to specific locations, stressing: “Peaceful demonstration is a guaranteed constitutional right”.
Sheikh Ahmed made a direct call to citizens and young people to come down and participate widely throughout the capital, without paying attention to fears of arrest or repression.
The Government’s Position:
On the other hand, the federal government is showing a firm commitment to its conditions, limiting demonstrations to only three areas. Authorities justify this measure by citing extreme security needs, including: maintaining public order in the capital and protecting the city from the risk of security disturbances.
Militarization of the Scene in the Capital:
On the ground, the political tension turned into mutual military movements, with a number of opposition leaders, accompanied by armed elements, stationed in different districts of the capital.
In contrast, there is a government mobilization, with the Somali government deploying reinforcements and intensive military forces near the locations where opposition leaders are concentrated.
A race Against Time to Defuse the Crisis:
In an attempt to avoid the worst-case scenario, informed sources revealed intensive mediation efforts taking place behind the scenes to calm the situation and prevent any armed confrontations that could disrupt the security stability that Mogadishu has recently witnessed. These coalition efforts are being led by a number of senators along with prominent clan leaders.
